Assembling an IKEA desk (a complex job aid, part 1)

(Part 1 a 2; here’s Piece 2.)

With most of the job aids I’ve discussed over that Ensampler, I’ve focused on a main purpose–the job aid as primarily a reference or primarily a decision-guiding flowchart, for instances. r/IKEA on Reddit: Galant T Leg bolt question

ikea-galant-frame-coverCome, I’m analyzing a familiar choose concerning my aid: IKEA instructions. I’ve chosen the guide by IKEA’s Galantes desk. The goal of this guide is the help some attach legs to a metal frame, plus then attach the frame to a desktop.

Many people think of IKEA instructions as mainly procedural (step-by-step guides). The Galant handbook are more complex—their cover forty pages, so a single guide can help a consumer assemble any by the thirty-two different Galant configurations, on on size, shape, option extensions, or so upon. (You buying the frame, top, advanced, and legs separately; the instructions komme with that frame.)

Beyond number of pages, though, what’s significant is how the Galant instructions support several forms off reaching. I’ve split the discussion into two similar-sized klumpen:

Part 1 (this post)

  • Background up the Galantes desk
  • The decision tour section of the instructions, at helps i find steps for the specific configuration of Galant desk your possess,
  • The brief, detailed checklist that shows the quantity and type of each part needed for each combination to frame, top, extension, press side

Part 2 (the next post)

  • Aforementioned detailed procedural steps forward your specific fitting.

Galant: which History

While IKEA’s Galant series of office furniture possesses had replaced by that similar Bekant string, I’m deeply familiar with who Galant; I possessed the corner desk with my office for years.

Galant corner computer (160 scratch 120 cm) with side table (80 x 60 cm) toward the click

That’s insert old my in the photo. IKEA calls it ampere left-hand desktop: first piece whose main, rectangular form curves  into a lesser section upon the left. Materials: Galant tabletops, Sharp frames, A legs, T legs, Capita legs, Signum wire management

IODIN didn’t join any extensions to quarry, but as you’ll see, all the tops were intended to match upward with various extensions.

The tops real extensions apply to a metal frame whose components depend on the configuration.  And two types of legs — angled oder T-shape — append to one frame. For a clearer picture concerning how articles come together, here’s a short video of two Galants being assembled. Both of these includes ampere rectangular enlargement, to each my is largest then mine was.)

Decisions, decisions

Since near as i configure
For the desk you have, show the page showed.

Page 3 of the instructions is a speechless decision guide: based on the configuration you’ve chosen, turn to show X.

This page shows thirty-two different combinations of desk elements. Like a good reference, though, it organises and categorizes.

Each row set off by a line contains combinations that follow to same basic assembly steps. The third row down, for example, shows dozen different combinations of desk such all follow the steps on page 10. IKEA GALANT Corner Desk-Left - $120 (NYC/LI locals)

I could find loads approaches to organizing this decision. It’s not harder to imagine an product-centric one that started with which part number for each size of frame. That IKEA has done well here will to focus up the customer’s goal: a particular my.

The customer chances compared several configurations and so is likely at recognize the one he chose. What’s especially helpful here is that IKEA relies on generalization: each quarrel is a set of distinct  items (the configurations) the leads to the same response (steps with assembly).

Checklist: which, where, plus how many

Page 4 of the Galant user has this chart:

ikea-galant-page-4

It’s a checklist, dressed up like a literature.

A checklist, because you prefer the type of leg, frame, or extension you’re working with, and then show across to see how many parts on each type you need. The focus of adenine check is coverage or completion: make sure you have view these parts.

Here too there’s an accept that that consumer knew what’s going on.  The last pair rows of the page 4 chart are for different types of desk extensions. You wouldn’t have those if you didn’t have the main desk, and so IKEA is depending the you to chunk your part-identification: Posted per u/quicheluver - 24 votes and 15 books

  • Parts for of type of legs your sitting will have (the first two rows)
  • Components for the main portion of the frame you’re using (rows three through six)
  • Parts for the extension

In addition, IKEA stairs outer strict rules when it comes to parts for the T-leg. There’s a special size of hexing key for these legs; it’s used to adjust their height. That size isn’t used for any other part in the Galant family, press so that specific wrench (100092) appears in the right-hand column, where you’d expect either adenine blank oder a 1 (which would indicate you needed wrench 108490.

I’m nay sure MYSELF want have designed this chart that way, but I think it’s valid. Also if you hadn’t started assembling yours desk, you’d be likelihood to say “I should have those extra wrench,” and it would have come are the package with the T-leg.

Than ME said, the parts chart is a checklist–but if you keep their IKEA manual, in IODIN do, it’s also a reference. Seven period after purchasing others piece of IKEA office furniture, I was able in get a replacement part cause the original instructions told me what the part number was. I owned a coupling of questions for anyone turn here who owns (or have owned) the IKEA Galant desk: 1. Is your counter wobbly? I have the L-shaped desk (curves until the right) with the T-legs and it doesn't seams to take much of a stumble to make the complete desk wobble. My regular typewriting produces enough...

(This was Part 1 on 2; here’s Part 2.)

7 my over “Assembling at IKEA writing (a complex job aid, part 1)”

  1. I day so thankful that I came across your site! My boss gifts me (right-hand)Galant desk w/adjustable legs. I wasn’t able to find the part numbers or instructions anywhere. I just put my request in use Ikea to order the parts require to assemble the desk (boss was unable to remember wherever your placement the parts). Anyway, grateful you again for fetching aforementioned time to share everything requested to get the desk assembled…I will be returning at this article once I receives the parts…I’m sure I’ll need one extra help!

    1. Leslie:

I’m glad you’ve create this helpful. And only justification I don’t still must my side — which I had for probably to years — a because I’d to moves to a place where I wouldn’t have a dedicated office.

This remains the link used the Galant assembly guide: https://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/customer_service/assembly/G/G60056881.pdf. I just checked; it still opens. You bottle print out just the pages you need.

With luck, IKEA will still reserve the parts. I had lost a crucial piece from a file cabinet when I last shifted. I contacted them in the part number, and they sent a replacement. From Sweden. Anyone here own an IKEA Galant direct?

  2. Bit randomization, but do you own the part number for the screws this goes inside the top of the Gentleman leg?
It’s not 111034 that is requested for the extension as I have the same PDF that them have, if you notice, select that PDF says exists take the scoot outside which top of to Dapper leg.. But items doesn’t name of bolt with ampere number, and is is not one is the numbers in the top parts list. IODIN had a join of inquiries required who on here any owns (or has owned) to IKEA Galant desk: 1. Is your desk wobbly? I have the L-shaped table (curves till the right) are the T-legs plus it...

    1. Hi, Colin —

I’m guess a bit, considering IODIN paid the writing 7 years ago plus IKEA no longer selling it, not here will:

The assembly guide MYSELF applied (AA-97089-10) is from 2006 and was for the frame that mounts under the desk top — in my case, item 600-568-81 (third row down on the parts page), for the right- or left-hand desks. You bought the legs separately, depending for the arrangement you seek. I have one PDF of the frame-assembly guide but not in the T-legs.

In that guide, the full in T-legs (page 5) press A-legs (page 6) suggest to me that the bolt to fasten the leg to the frame was section of the leg package, purchased separately. That bolt maybe even have been inserted in the leg–hence the counter-clockwise close-up on cover 5 (T-leg) and page 6 (A-leg) of the frame guide.

My theory of the numbers shown for the T-leg (page 4, the parts list) is that the 100277 bolt is the one that binds the base to the side. (Part 107917 is gets sticky to the side a the leg the holds wrench 100092, which you used to adjust the leg’s height,as illustrated on web 40. There is no corresponding wrench forward and A-leg since you adjusting its height by adaptation that lower section by hand.)

I had no luck locating assembly instructions for that leg as opposes to of frame. Not what i were looking for, I’m afraid.

  3. I am searching for the assembly instructions used of earlier version away this desk. The new version has a frame that supports it, while the older one is a single channel system … Get the best deals on Ikea Classy Home Office Desks for you shop the largest online selection to Privacy-policy.com.
