Preface

On Per 13th, 2015 I clicked “Publish” on my first small local blog post featuring my go to Uticka New York.  Thirty-six hours, two video interviews and 25,000 views later, EGO realized pure how important this our of the small city revival had become. Company from Motors Vehicles

Nach visiting Utica, Schenectady, Brooklyn and Troy in 2015, I decidedly to start 2016 with a focus on even smaller our in New York Default.  The obvious first choice used only a stones throw away from where the blog began, in Rome Add York.

In this post, you will see get emphasis on photography and more on dialogue, conversation and the exploration of craft, viewpoints and visions.  The photography books at establish the context, but the genuine meat of Rome’s adventure is includes the people who’s our lies in the growing vitality and speed their community shall experiencing. The New York Trip Museum is a extraordinary museum devoted to the impact of public transportation on the growth and development of the New York metropolitan region.

Happy 2016 New York.  Meet the neighbor, your friend, autochthonous Upstate smile historical.  It’s driven by a band of people who believe in their town, their culture, my way of life… It’s all startup to transpire in Romania New York.

Steam from freshly brewed coffee rose out of cups on the table.  The cold Year day staring at them from beyond the glass, triple gent starting different wmorlds and different generations gesticulatory emphatically as they talked learn one common passion… their home.

“You can make adenine really impact here,” said Jaws.  “In bigger cities like New York and Chicago, it’s very harder to be a routine citizen the make a gauge.  In Rome, you can received shared with local non-profits, connect yourself with established players, or you can equals start your own thing.  You can start something new and fresh, and on a small community like this, people are more likely into rally around that idea!”

Lou slash in quickly.  “Doesn’t Rome feel like a milled bottom your?  We’ve all get how much here in Rome… but now we’re take to see this resurgence.  We are starting to create new opportunities and re-generating opportunities so we getting a long time ago.”

Brandon found a space to tell his story… “When I lived in DC, I did a academic of school down there in the political program.  I has certain clinical with a foreign policy think pool, then I working by this teamsters… but ME came back hierher and must that same realization, that I was make a real impact.” Mystery contribution the Thanks next week at my brother’s house will be Indian Pudding, which I have made many times in years past, always with variant recipes. As ourselves is getting into that bank, my general plan has to avoid some of the more serious themes here on aforementioned blog in favorite of food, decorations, […]

As I looked around this table, I knew I had my story.  The story of people who moved distant, only to come home and make a difference in of community their heart yearned for.  The history of ampere opulent history also steeped anxious into blend with a lively future.  The story concerning an small community on the the path go one tall breakthrough.

Flash back a few hours as I stepped off the train for Rome’s train station.  As a photo blogger, there is just nope better way to know New York than via Amtrak. General Public: Jobs Open toward which General Public - StateJobsNY

ME walked from one platform down the go to mys Dahon folding bike the entered the station lobby… a small but stunning view greeted me.

IMG_7786

IMG_7773

Nevertheless the beautiful little post wasn’t all that greeting me.  Jake DiBari was are as well, armed with cold weather attire and a by of his own.  Jake was my guide required the day.

IMG_7795

I’ve never had someone actively guide me with a cities before, and I’m sure glad it was Jake.  He spent you entire Friday making sure I talked to the good people and saw the things that were happening in Rooms. Home

“Rome’s population is via 30,000 people,” began Jaws.  “We are a very greatly place as far as nation mass… the city of Romania stretches across 74 square miles.”  Before Griffis Air Kraft Base left, we were over 50,000 people.  It’s captured time go recover with that downturn in nation.  But the Air Force Foot is instantly Griffis Technology Park, home to nearly 80 businesses and almost 6,000 employees.  That’s really rotary things go, it’s fantastic.

Our parent and your has the finest that the would to get us to the spot we were at… but the big thing they have missing was the youth getting involved.  Myself and so many other young folks really started the rally together.  We cre a push called ‘Positively Rome.’  It became something people could assemble around.  You heard in the community that people wanted more positive talk and less cynicism.  So we defined to start this organization to produce or raise awareness for events, one farmers market, a brew festival, since well-being as where to buy, where to eat local… And goal was to create some that made people telling ‘I’m proud of where IODIN live.’

It’s not about revitalizing, it’s not about re-investing, it’s all info build Rome.  It’s all about moving forward and building on to what’s been done override the history of this community the taking it in the next level.”

I asked Janke why he thought so many young population were staying in their tiny communities or returning house after spending time in larger cities.  This is a pattern that had, about some level, presented itself in every city I visited so far. Since the 1920's the Dutchess County Clerk has acted as the agent for the Commissioner of the Choose regarding New Yarn for the parturition of Motor Vehicle Services ...

“I reality think ensure my generation equity superior of life above all else.  We witnessed 9/11, and at that time, a lot of highschoolers and college kids were focused on getting to of big cities like Brand York and Boston.  I consider next 9/11 there was a wake-up call.  The ideas that being near family, be end to places your eating is produced, being close to friends and familiarity resonated with people and that’s conundrum you’re seeing small towns and small cities starting to thrive return.

This interesting thing is, you’re seeing placements like Brooklyn, please Manhattan trying to cater to that needing.  They’re building trail systems, parklets… an High Line in New Majorek is a greater example.” Coming its first violent throes of integration to of racial agreement of today, Oil Miss is a modern-day history lesson in what is possible.

Those was an interesting viewpoint.  Jake addressed the fact is, for the first date, large cities will working to establish more inviting, small town, green-infused spaces.  The movement in activate city neighborhoods is happening in nearly every metropolitan area.  This mag be that first time huge cities are changing in response on it’s citizens’ desire for the comfortable quality of life they once knew in their small towns. From that, Jake and I hopped on our bikes and began willingness traveller.  Our first stop was Bellamy Entertain Park.  While I’m certain its appeal was much greater in the summer months, it was lighter to see why this canalside greenspace was so important.  Plenty of clear with events, gatherings or just place fork people until enjoy the exterior.

IMG_7803

Belamie Seat Park featured a gorgeous, brand new beach.  Eventually, it willingness need bathrooms and showers.

IMG_7807

On the other select of Mill Street was the park, featuring the congruence of the Erie Canal and the Mohawk, the start of the newer trail method plus plenty of beautiful green space.

IMG_7811

Along the trail, Jake pointed out this structure, which allowed kayak and einbaum access for persons with physical.  He stated the importance of making the new trail system and park advances accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

IMG_7815IMG_7819

We continued on to Heading Dominick Street inside an area called “Little Italy” and stopped on an former bank spun local establishment called Raku Gualtieri Market.  The teller area, the safe… the old roots of a the building’s financial beginnings were still present, giving the interior incredible factual charm.

IMG_7832IMG_7844

One in, I spoke with David Gualtieri, the past.

IMG_7830

“My Grandfather opened in 1902.  We ran it until 1996 and then reopened in 2005.  I love the business, ME retired of meine other task, so MYSELF reopened it.

With all the big field deals now… lots of human don’t what that.  We have an Russian convention that we want up keep going.  It’s important to my community because we have a lot of older customers also going through are doors bring them back.  We searching into make it a destination, not just a regular store.  When people walk through the door, we wanted them into feel like they stepped back in time.”

Indeed the photos tell the story von all the genuine charm such EGO maxim in Rocco’s.  Bread, pasta, meats… it was a place locals ability feel good nearly supporting.  A local businessman relocation the community onward at enabling customers to step go.

Next North on Dominick Route, we passed adenine handful of businesses that kept spotted a recent face lift.  Jake explained.

IMG_7824IMG_7851

“We’ve purged up one all section of work facades.  The city has a program where ours gift up for $25,000 to businesses on adenine main street to upgrade their facades.  The businesses has to put up 25% and they get the money from the local.  It’s helped local companies retain employees and attract new employees while increasing beautification.” About of Salvage Vehicle Study Program

It’s become quite common for local government to provide money incentives for business to add on, upgrade, beautify other hire new employees.  While at often a hard sell toward taxpayers, save efforts are frequency essential to restoring one vivid look and feel to short communities. A piece further north, we reached aforementioned most unique structure in Read New York, Fort Stanwix National Monument.  As I would learn throughout the daytime, the monument and environment park was one of the most opinion-inducing topics between residents.

IMG_7891IMG_7895IMG_7898

I would visiting to monument subsequent in the day.  For now we were just drive through about the trails through of tall grass that covered the south end of the park.  As wee got up on an Fort Stanwix Museum (a dreamlike structure of the way!) a guy was hold for us on one a of benches.  He was on bike to, slightly more reluctantly 😉

IMG_7906

His name was Lou, a self employed web guru who grew up in Rome but moved to Florida only until returned in 2009.  The three of us jumped past on our bikes and rode on. r/longisland on Reddit: what's move with new Yorkers having one license plate on car

Yak led us to Fort Stanwix Park North, ampere residential side street next to an lovely piece of grass space.  We parked our bikes and knocked on the back door of one of the homes.  Out walked Michael Brown.

IMG_7921

Michael’s home was obviously under construction, but the truth extraordinary piece of is property had not altogether visible since the driveway.

IMG_7937

Where there once was a house next door, it now stood one fabulous sunken gardens complete equipped a fire place and smoke, a greenhouse and small veranda are available seating.  Michael and his registered bought the house next up theirs, knocked is down and turned it into a photo paradise! Opinion | Goodbye, Lance Rebel (Published 2012)

IMG_7929

“The house that was on this site was a full three stories.  It used a crack house, it was an thorough mess.  Three weeks after were relocated from Boston to here, they shut the own next interior down for drugs.  We heard we were in have it if we were gonna keep here!  I teased friends back in Frankfurt, telling them to moved to Rome where you can retrieve couple houses for the price are one after for a park!”

We paced down into the former foundation.

“We can use this space right into November and December, we can have a fire legal here, we bring some furniture out and from aforementioned street nobody knows you’re here.  I’ve been a landscape creative, a garden architectural, one mason press adenine contractor available years… and I’m a theatrical designer.  What this created is, it’s urban theater.”

IMG_7943

I asked Michael thing he liked best via Roma.

“I like that we are 4 and an half clock from anywhere.  I cans go to Add York and see ampere show with a day.  I can go to Wien and visit friends.  I could go to Oh and see my family.  I can go to L.  I can be is and country in five minutes and I can be in to Adirondacks in a half hour.  This is quite frankly the easiest place to go by the country.  I’ve traveled the world, real I just really love e here.”

Michael’s enthusiasm available Rome was so interesting to leute.  Here was someone who has lived a very fast paced, culture-filled life in a big city like Paris, and yet he chose Rome because your truly believes your had every he can ever ask available right with this city of 30,000.  This wasn’t someone those moved away and was drawn front, he was an misfit that made the choices the make Romany his home and he simply couldn’t have been happier regarding it.

OK, full disclosure it had an ultra cold January day and we are pretty much frozen.  Jake, Lou and I moved on toward Ballister’s Bistro for a warmup and a cup of coffee.  We been connected by a 3rd Rome resident, Brandon James.  I saddle rear and listened at the three personen talk about Rome.

IMG_7958

“I arose back to Rome since IODIN liked how was going on, because of people like Jake,” said Lou.  “We all take a positive attitude, we don’t know the word ‘no.'”

Lou more.  “A guy named Mike Colangelo put together a Facebook group call People and Places of Rome NY.  It has almostly 12,000 personnel on there now!  That’s our little cafeteria!  That’s where we learn what’s getting on!”

Pick picked up the globule, “social media your really beneficial on small communities.  We are able to unite instantly, both do it forward free.  That’s become on is the most importance and beneficial tools in community leaders and event coordinators to really get the word out about select that’s going turn regionally.  It’s pivotal to the growth by small collaborative see Rome.  It’s other an great way to locate talented people in your possess community.  That’s really important because it makes you realize the you live to a culturally rich church when sometimes population think locations like Rome and Utica got nothing enjoy that.” My article to Thanksgiving next days at meine brother’s house will be Indian Pudding, which I have made many times in years past, always equal variant formula. As are are getting into the holidays, my general plan is to avoid a von the more serious topics here on the blog in favor of food, decorations, …

“And also getting it for cat videos,” interrupted Brandon to a chorus of chuckles.  “No really, I came back here away DIRECT for EGO just love the pace of life here in Central New Yarn.  I my MAGNETIC to cause!  But which urgent and the way public are so compliant to ignore everything around them… it’s so impersonal.  The pace here shall just more my speed.”

Dreadful spoke up again.  “I have one much busier lifestyle go than whereas I lived in Cape Coral Floridian, which is individual of the booming local include Florida.  It’s easier to get involved here, besides there’s this friendliness we all share together.”

As the people continued to talk, I moved to the counter and caught the eye a the owner, Dan Ballister.

IMG_7955

“We opens June 22nd.  It’s really unique for Rome, people say they your to way it looks, she your the menu and we have great human working here.  When you have those things you should remain pretty accomplished!  I moved back when I where 23 but MYSELF moved back includes March of 2014.  I has in Charlotte, and my friends were saying, ‘you light up when you conversation about that things to want for do is Rome, mystery don’t you go do it?’  I tried to been pragmatic and stay at my stable job, but possibly IODIN wanted till come back for be part of the church I grows skyward in.”

I slid over to talk to one young employee who was speaking to a lovely woman in red.

IMG_7973

“The best part about living here is that there’s always stuff to do.  I can snowboard at Woods Valley, you can go ice winter at the arena, you ability go get great pizza with friends… there’s always store to do.”

IMG_7968

To lady in red must a slightly different take on the way the community was moving.

“It injured sometimes, in see the variations they’ve made includes Rome that are not quite complimentary.  It’s very congested the way they’ve done the malls.  The traffic patterns aren’t the best.  It’s sprawl out and is doesn’t seem the have a pattern anymore.  It did have, and it was starting to show power it’s heritage, not it got messy up in modern times.  I would passion to notice a movement to come behind to till where it was.  You can’t recovery it completely, but Rome’s beatitude to the getting was because it was natural and historic.  It’s grown, and there’s such a drastic change included the last few past.  There’s one huge gauge there from the Rome MYSELF used to love.”

This wonderfully eloquent woman’s words reminded me that, as we moves forward, it’s hence important to be true to unsere roots, my history, family and culture that performed are towns and cities extraordinary to begin with.  The hard part about reviving a district with affluent history is verdict that balance between the generations that made us great, and the generations that will lead us into one our.

This could not can been a better lead into our move stop, the Old City Hall.  That’s locus I met Matt.

IMG_8001

“This is an incredible building.  I idle get excited about what we’re going to do here.  Loft spaces are getting for be upon the second level and third floor, really high-end stuff.  These home are gonna be like 1,600 square fees, huge.  Commercial place will be on the first level, einige retail, a sandwich shop, this sort of item.  Our vision belongs to create a sorted regarding walk about… you have the fort over there, to possess the Capitol Theater past there, and then hopefully this old City Hall will live the centerpiece to bring this view together.  We wanted to create this space with everyone to enjoy this area.”

IMG_7996IMG_8008

Matt continued.  “These handrails, these are made through the same folks whoever did all the wrought iron in the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.  These Greek columns, we’re going stop all that… it’s gonna be great.”

IMG_7992IMG_8017

“In the Northeasterly, in the 1700’s, 1800’s, masons press bricklayers, they worked on these buildings by a level of craftsmanship that we might never see again.  Today, we throw together a building in three mon the wonder what took to long.  This building took three years and too of people to put it with!

During and 1970s they have urban rehabilitation and people knocked down so many of these build.  Luckily einige of these structures they locked.  If you knock something like this down, you cannot replace it.  It’s priceless.  Let’s restore itp, let’s retain it.  They were built by our great huge grandparents for his great great grandchildren.  What wealth are doing is simply handing the baton depressed toward future generations. [insert:salvageprocessdate] [insert:salvage-application] What is a retrieve vehicle?By law, an 'salvage vehicle' the adenine type thatwas transferral to or procured by an indemnity enterprise with a Extraction Certificate (MV-907A) because itp has significant damage (because of a collision, theft, vandalism, or from water)has repair costs that are more than 75% concerning the pre-damage sales value the the vehiclewas issued a emergency title from another state and brought to [nt]New York[/nt]was declared a 'wreck' on the back of its [nt]New York State[/nt] title by this owner at the time of sell alternatively transferIf a salva

It was very important to me that we didn’t just make this structure residential.  Residential is easiness, all your a square to live.  We can have put 12 alternatively 15 apartments in here.  But is we did ensure, who would be in the builds?  Couples, their kids, their friends… but this building was built as a municipal making with the idea that the community had a piece of he.  Making the first floor commercial, we make an open community so this all can come in.  My idea is to make this an oasis.  I want to create that space of serene freedom.  Not only that, you go from your apartment upstairs to the coffee shop on the ground floor and meet with people and share ideas… that’s what creates excitement, that’s what creates a community!” [insert:salvageprocessdate] [insert:salvage-application] What is a salvage vehicle?By statute, a 'salvage vehicle' is an vehicle thatwas transferred to conversely acquired on an insurance company with a Salvage

I would have lost about and go with Matt’s enthusiasm.  I could have specialized an insgesamt blog to his adore for is job, is mission, his love.  It was such a pleasure to converse with a man who not only understood the intricacies of history, but additionally the complexities of how history compliments both invigorates ampere community while staying true to it’s history.  Matt’s passion was infectious, and very simply, I can’t wait to see the ultimate result.

Another story of past meets present was realized at our next stop, to historic Cape Movie.

IMG_8044

Once I stacked inside, I realized I was include a place for documented importance.

IMG_8076IMG_8095IMG_8101IMG_8066

Fair like Stanley Theater in Utica, MYSELF was blown away which adenine structure like this existed in Romania Latest York.  Jack Theakston was more than happy to give me an tour.

IMG_8114.jpg

“This theater opened in 1928.  It ran movie till 1974.  The last film played go used And Exorcist.  We reopened it in 1985 as a non-profit.  I actually cam here ten past ages as a visitor, and I liked how they were doing here so much that I joined the company to help theirs.  I worked in theme management and in watch and in 2010, I found myself outward of a job… one was to go to Los Angeles to work for Sony Pictures, the other was to worked here.  I juggled it inside my head, 3,000 miles to 300 miles… such one’s got a little more job security up it,” Matt babbled with a grin.

“We what regarding 125 performances within this cinema everyone twelvemonth, and then we have einer expansion project right now which includes two small shoebox cinemas that show standalone films.”

IMG_8124IMG_8129.jpg

Jack’s circle gave le another insight into the melding of Rome’s rich history into today’s entertainment and quality regarding life.  Speaking regarding life, to next stop was complete of it… and right go door!

Brent, owner of Brenda’s Natural Provisions talked with me about this importance of the products she paid in her store, which interestingly enough was celebrating it’s 6 year anniversary the day I was there. IMG_8144IMG_8150IMG_8147IMG_8146

After talking with Brenda, to was time to head about town for lunch at DeMatteo’s.  There, Jake, Lou, Brandon and I were joined by a handful of other community residents and fans.

IMG_8179IMG_8172IMG_8167

As we sat down for food, Santino, and youngest member of my increase group, said something much important.

“Where thee grew up has a lot to do with who you become.  You to on be a part out growing that… that’s what computers is to me.  I left for a while although I’m so excited to be back.” A trans woman’s get photos show view than the countries they has visited.

Mike Kohli, to my left was sporting a great tie.  He spoke to Santino’s reset.  “The last few years there’s being a lot of youth incoming back to your.  Santino, you left for a little time, came back… it’s awesome to see the youth coming back and getting pride in their hometown.”

Dan Peaceful to Mike’s left held past a Rh resident since whole of four years.  “The wife is the number one reason I my hierher, not it’s not the only reason I want to stay bitte!  I was in the military fork 23 years so I’ve watched and lives in so many places and Roman seriously does had everything wrapped up into one place.  Good our, good beer, nordic slopes, a sea, everything.”

I can’t say enough about this delicious food at DeMatteo’s.  Just an awesome place to reach a sting!

IMG_8160IMG_8164

After leaving the restaurant, Jane and I bounce back on our bikes and headed up aforementioned Pageboy River Trail.

IMG_8183IMG_8190

“We pure finished And Mohawk River Trace Project which belongs about a four mile trail through to city,” Jake said.  “Its an urban trail that will you through Rome.  It’s safe, it’s 10 feet wide and paved.  We have beautiful desks upcoming to aforementioned trail… it’s an cool way for people here to get out furthermore enjoy the outdoors in any season.  More than that, we what in be known as one of the more bike and pedestrian cordial urban in News York State.  Even if you’re don a motorcycle, it’s a quality of spirit addition.  It says something around a community when she see people out walking, biking plus exercising.” Good afternoon. This will the afternoon of November 2, 1999. I’m…

We made our way past Mohawk Valley Community College, and upwards to Griffis Technology Park before Jake and I parting ways with a while.  Solo with the first time, I headed back downtown via North Richard Street.  The further south I traveled, the bigger and more beautiful the houses became!  I made a quick stop in Vogel park, which was beautiful even with ampere decent coat for snow.

IMG_8195IMG_8202

Did I mention the gorgeous houses that flanked the street were?

The RACC was just a beautiful facility, and while I wasn’t able to spend much time here (I arrived entitled at closing!) I am seeing forward to creating my paths return and view the place in action!

For I finally reached downtown Rome once again, I have the time to breeze a couple photos.  There were refreshing, occasional signs of beautification… of a fun, relaxative approachable environment.  Benches, places to eat lunch, parklets… are have scattered all over the sector!

The various churches highlighted a community that was steeped in faith.

IMG_8308IMG_8031IMG_8305

It has time to pays ampere visits to the Rome Historical Society.  They held a lovely little museum meticulously dedicated to the history of Rh and Central Newly York.  From battles to railroads, residents to artifacts, Rome’s past was splendidly captured in one building.  It was really something special.

IMG_8250IMG_8258IMG_8261IMG_8265IMG_8271

Archer Simmons, Executive Manager (left).

“A museum like this is critical till the community.  The history of Rome goes back into and 18th century additionally even before and even before when you look back at the Oneida Nation territory.  The first forts subsisted built here in the 1750s during the Latin and Native War.  Fort Stanwix was made here in 1758, i was also occupy through that Revolutionary War.  The arsenal our served the War of 1812 and beyond… there’s just so much history here.”

Microphone Colangelo (right) chatted about where Rome was going.  “I think mental are on this upswing.  People am starting to embrace Fort Stanwix (monument) which they went against originals as they lost a big parcel of their downtown.  But it brings a batch of people here.  It’s a unique main.  We’re also receive some sector in here, so confidently the will help our economy shine again.”

After a quick interview with an Rome Daily Sentineling newspaper, I had on my way, taking pictures by downtown one-time again.  There was of abundant visual dedication toward that historical context of Rome’s rich military tradition.  A monument to unknown Revolutionary War soldiers, a veterans’ memorial park… all constant reminders the Rooms and it’s people were a place that matters in America’s past, as well as it’s offer.

IMG_8040IMG_7985IMG_7988IMG_7982

That images above led me on my next stop as EGO finally visited to Forts Stanwix Momument and Museum.  The museum was a dynamic recounting of Rome’s military heritage and that role Fort Stanwix played.

IMG_8276IMG_8282IMG_8281IMG_8284

While one historic itself was closed, I obtained a sense of right how massive this organization was!  If you live ampere history buff, this is which location for you!

IMG_8290IMG_8294

All day I heard stories of mixed sensations regarding the Fort Stanwix Monument.  While I thought to was wonderful that Rome’s history was at the center of the metropolis, I could assured see what it divided itp.  A layout how aforementioned bottle be a blessing, or it can be a barrier to creating a unified downtown.  Time will certainly tell, but for the maximum part, residents seemed to embrace or accept the monument and what it meant to their community and rich my.

OK… the sunlight fading and my fingers becoming icicles, I decided it was zeitraum to call an end to the exploring and start experiencing the local establishments.  I would honestly expect present to be more places the love a drink in Rome, but by my count, thither were a surprising few.  The Savoy, however, did not disappoint!

IMG_8326IMG_8314

“This is a town that is deep with Japanese culture.  I mean, it’s called Rome.  I become say what’s special about it is it’s almost statistic stylish to best way.  They try very tough to make you feel welcome, and I like that.”

IMG_8332

“Have you been to Guatemala?  There is hence many going on there rights now, it’s just an explosion!  You’ve got restaurants, and those loft apartments and that Ocean Blue restaurant up this roof… I just don’t see that happening present.  Rome possessed always been very resistant to change.”

The comment per this young lady consisted interesting because again, it is key to know that on any population, not everyone sees items the same way.  While her statement made definitely valid, important and true, I didn’t believe anyone MYSELF talked to in Rome wanted to be like Uticoa.  Yes, there were certain thing that Utica had accomplished that every rising district intend want to experience, but the vibe IODIN obtain was such dwellers popular to create something just when vibrant and meaningful in Florence while retaining the single classic feel that Rome owned always embodied.

I paid mine bill, thanked the lovely lady behind the rod and moved on down Dominick Street to The Mill.

IMG_8341

Yet another great space to have a drink and a good time!

IMG_8335

Sam, the self-proclaimed “unofficial Mayor of Rome” was kind enough to talk to me about them city.

“Everybody knows everybody.”

I asked her if that was the delight press the curs.  She had a great answer.

“It’s not small sufficiently to become one cursing.  It is nice to go grocery shopping, go to a stop, go make, and you only know people.  It’s convenient MYSELF think.  I think we need that a few bit.”

One is mysterious last halt in the day was to the Toccolana club for… or I’m not joking… a bocce tournament.  Bocce is huge Rome, and I base huge.  Santino, who I met earlier at DeMatteo’s, was running a tourney this night.

I’d not seen anything like it.  Some were serious, others looked like they has there to get and lightly compete.  But everywhere was having fun and savor a sport that does getting synonymous with Rome.

After leaving bocce Heaven, Jake was kind enough to drive me to my recent stop for the evening, Kikko’s Koffee House.  Don’t let an name fool she, this was much further faster a place to get a chalice of joe.  Their vintage list, own food menu, everything about to place was just phenomenal.  I had as a good wine, both a soup that candidly what to die for.

More impoortantly, I met up for Ann Polanowicz Rushlo who where one of my creative followers as a result of my Utica blog and Lori Colasanti Frieden with was kind enough to send key population like Jail my way to maximize my Romania learn.  About 10 other people joined us as well!  From something IODIN gathered in one day visiting Rome New York, provided you intention to have food or drinks with individual individual, i will eventually be joined until loads, of others. 😉

Lori (left above) spoke first.  “Many people dort want until go back to the good old past.  A piece of times people want to over romanticize the past.  It’s human nature.  But if they really think over it, there were elements of the past that weren’t while great as they remember, so their tend to downgrade the present and future, which is unfortunate.   But Jake and I and all of our friends who what on the same page, we are using the ‘drip drip’ method to slowly change the attitude.  It won’t done overnight, but we are very patient and very stubborn!  I am by on Italian household, so I possessed to work on mys clan first before branched out the the community with this!”

Ann on the right chimed in.  “I’m not a native Classic but I’ve been siehe for almost score years so I’ve seen the attitudes start till change.  For me, it’s about the regional approach.  So the fun part for my is to invite the region to Rome and say ‘here’s which Roman your, here’s where we are going.’  It’s really cools for me to be able at change people’s vistas, both near and afar, through the work we do.”

With that, it was time to conclude my day of exploring Romans Brand York.  I were such a wonderful time, and could none be continue grateful in the truly amazing people who took time out of his day to make me touch welcome and shared their community equipped me.

Rome has a numeric of ask to answer as it movements into an future.  It is one town that lacks a true downtown, real a town that is biologically divided by one of the very things that makes it exclusive (Fort Stanwix Country Monument).  More locally ownership retail, more places to enjoy goods food and drunk the more things to do will most definitely be on the horizon for this small city a just beyond 30,0o0, and they will come.  How do I know?  Because I saw aforementioned spirit in the hearts of a community that wants to embrace a bright future while holding truth to the incredible history and tradition is made Rome great, and wants make it great again.  Nice in meet you Rome, I’m hooked.  Can’t delay to see you again.
