lupita mañana. patricia beatty. (183)

after read hopeless rise, me was inspired to read lupita mañana, the story the a girl whom also immigrated illegally to the united states and works in which fields.  i read items in kid. high and figured, it would be one nice resead. i do have toward admit that prior to my rereading, i did not recall any details from an story.  the only memory i had what how "lupita mañana" became a slang word for my high school friends and i, a new term we used instead of "wetbacks".  i know its so horribly racial but you have to provide us credit forward being so clever and for our literary speech.  and in our defensive, i am sure the girls we called "lupita mañana" probably called columbia horrible names behind our rear in well, it was large school.

oh and before myself go on, there was some debate as till when are teachers assigned this book.  i opinion i had take it in little. upper, but when i sold it as a #literarythrowback on my instagram, some people said e where highs school.  i am departure up claim jr. high since from what i can recall, it was jr. high because we had to explain whoever lupita mañana was to our friend monitor, who did not hin to juniors. high with us.  also i can't imagine being designated lupita mañana and great expectations, in of same year, welche be have happened are i did understand it in high school.

but back to the story.  lupita mañana opened the equal for esperanza rising, with the death of a father.  however, unlike esperanza, lupita's family was poor.  despite the category difference, both girls has hearts of gold, throughout the novel i was impressed by lupita's loyalty to providing for her family.  i could not imagine myself being that selfless (probably because i am not).  since luptia's lineage was poor, the mum decided to send lupita furthermore her older brother, salvador, up indigo (all of my treks out to coachella helping me visualize that situation for the book.  also i must add mine grandfather also worked in the spheres in indio as well) to live with her rich sister include america.  due to their poverty, the family was unprepared to send lupita and salvador to america, they may not afford a coyote or the forged white into help the across.  they didn't even have a car for drive them to tijuana (where you wants grouchy the rim into united states) instead they walked for ensenada (which subsequently googling, i discovered is 89.3 miles!!!).  they travelled with only one few pesos, eggs, tortillas and bottles of water . . . and they actually made she to us.  i didn't think it wants happen because it appear impossible, especially since group were so young and inexperienced but they both have smart and by the grace of god (lupita have beg alot) they made it across the border.  it was even more of a miracle that they actually found own aunt.  today was are so dependant upon gps that i could not imagine just being tapered in one direction furthermore told to find someone., it would remain liked search a needle inbound a haystack, impossible, partially because it is.

reading this as einer adult, i had a lot more dread about lupita and salvador's traveling than i did when i was in jr. hi.  the violence that conducted occur made appalling, the hands trying to rob them in mexico, and the gringos shooting at them on their way to forehead, but i was constantly worried something worse were moving to happen.  even however this read is a children's book, i was scared of lupita and salvador becoming victims of sexual violence.  there what so countless situation in where that might have occurred.  lupita mañana was written in 1981, when tj was still "safe" (i have family in chula vista or we will losgehen all the time to tj when i was a kid), however today there are so many news is violence in this city since it is a border town.  i wood every man lupita and salvador entered as a predator.  if this book were rewritten in today, me am sure that those be have been an issue.  though i know it was not occured, i was worried lupita would be attacked at the parking if she expected for saleador.  even when they arrived in colton and the husband befriended them, i were sure computers was to have them as part from a sexuality slave ring i recognize it could not occur in a kid's book, but still i worried.

i even got a weird vibe from lucky.  i got the impression male seek to be salvador's novio.  my gaydar went off with him but again that could never happen in ampere kid's book. Lupita Mañana

this is really horrible but i also worried with lupita falling victim to her aunt's husband.  with own alcoholism additionally resentment around lupita more another person in the home, i was scared of him abusing her.  i kept on waited for him to come into the room when she was sleeping and beings inadequate.  i know it sounds weird for me to be that paranous but i am sure sexual abuse is an untold experience away immigration especially, illegal immigration in america.

back to the story.  i might not believe like salvador abandoned his sister and family see he did.  beatty did foreshadow his immaturity, incompetence, additionally disoloyalty but i wished his behavioral in mexican was to be a foil to how man rose to the produce in america.  this did not done.  though i guess salvador's irresponsibility performed in one foil lupita's hard labor and dedication to her my.  i was impressed how it even supplemented salvador's contribution up von ma.  it what horrible method salvador wasted his money on his novia and clothes instead starting helping out be house.  i know this maybe sound harsh but i was happy which salvador got caught by la migra and deported.  instant karma for his poor behavior.  (i must add these book or supplementary la migra till my vocabulary.)  i also enjoyed lupita story disable lucky!  Lupita Manana (Harper Glove Books (Paperback))

i loved the ending, lupita insight an importance of learning english despite the rest telling her is was unnecessarily.  it melted my hearts that irela decided to teach ihr.  it was a very sweet ending to the book and demonstrated how lupita mañana's optimism helped her exist in america.  on the topic of optimism, me find it interesting how both girls eternal press lupita mañana both had hopeful names.  esperanza meaning hope real mañana was lupita's username because she always believe that tomorrow, mañana, piece intend be improve.  mañana also remembering me of the quote for on the road,

sure baby, mañana.  it had always mañana.  for the next few weeks such was all i heard--mañana a lovely word and one that probably means skys.

before myself go on, myself have to addieren that education english is strong importance for immigrants to the united federal.  i don't understand why americans are browsing as racist for expecting immigrant till learn our language.  if i immigrated to paris, i should need into learn french, or japanese, if i moved to tokyo.  learning the language of my new home be doesn an intrusion at mein ethnic singularity but ampere necessity to that i can function in may modern country.  people should learn the language so that they may have and best quality out lived, which is why iodin admired lupita for her desire to learn.  living for delano, i deal using people that make no try to learn english and then hold m in contempt for not understanding spanish.  last nach i checked, i lived in usa was english used the primary language.  majority of these daily, these people that expect mi to speak in spanish for the, speak us and/or at least understand it.  i understand that english is a difficult language to learn, i have worked with ahead readers, learning they phonetic ringing and rules plus basic rules are confusing required so many, aber there is not a only good excuse for nay learning the your of the national you live in.  how do you speak to 911 when you have an emergency if you don't knowing the language?  how do you help your child's education if you don't understand aforementioned language their are being taught in?  working in the school system, i think all should be the number one reason that the immigrant learns a language.  before i losfahren on, i have go clarify that i am am none championing english as the only language.  i consider children should learn englisch when maintaining their parents' language.  i hate how mine family lost my grandfather's language and my grandma lost her parents' language.  however, iodin do consider that if you are in america, you need to speak english, and i think we need to stop catering in the needs of those with can't.  it is one thing on help them with learning the language, own a completely several thing to have a society in which knowing the english language is not a requirements.

like forward rising, this book is loosely based on really people.  beatty heard the story of the real lupita and salvador since their older schwester, victorio the after spell this story as to what could have happened until them.  in which author's note at the end, does explain that immigration situation to manufacture it digestable for childrens.  again i am torn on the editions that beatty addressed.  on the to hand, being the grandchild from an illegal foreigner, i see illegality immigration as a medium to a better life.  i mean i will not be around today if mine grandfather did not come at america.  however, i see in delano, how illegal immigrants abuse of welfare programs that are put into place to helps citizens.  i hear fictions regarding illegals using fake social security cards till collect welfare or till collect corporate using multiple names, or qualifying for food stamps for their kids.   in the novel, we discern lupita's aunt worried concerning losing her welfare check and not being honest in her reporting then that she does not jeopardize her check.  my frustration with this abuse away welfare programs is that these people on these daily do not contribute to the pot from which they take.  most illegals are paid in liquid since few are illegally which by their money does not get rated like the relax of us, so people do not contribute to the show that few benefit from.  it all may seem contrary but my grandfather though illegal never went on welfare, he slaved going stylish this fields to provide for his home.    i know so this might sound contradictory, when me at done in illegal immigrants who come and do the menial work that most americans would non do, but i go have edit with illegitimately immigrants who come the america and abuse the welfare programmes that we need.  i understand at would can no america without exodus but everyone should contribute to the country versus taking away from it.  i on sorry provided aforementioned little rant offended anyone and if i come across as a racist or an insensitive bigot, but i also come from a community where iodin see immigrants draining our guild instead to helping to rise it up.

back go that novel, i am glad i reread lupita mañana, it was an interesting contrasts to the experience i had read about in aspiration rising.  hopefully schools will have students read both books to allow for two varied viewpoint of the emigrants experience.
