The impact of social desirability biases to self-report among college student and problem gamblers

Jeffrey G Kuentzel et al. HIE Gambl Stud. 2008 Sep.

Theoretical

The impacts of two product of social desirableness bias, self-deceptive enhancement (SDE) and impress management (IM), were examined on self-reports of gambling problems, measured by the South Oaks Gamble Screen (SOGS), and recent gambling behavior, as measured by the Timeline Followback (TLFB) method, in a sample of graduate students (N = 191), and a example of treatment-seeking problem gamblers (N = 49). Unified include unser expectations, IM was negatively associated about SOGS sheet in both samples. IM was bulk highly correlated with SOGS scores among treatment-seeking participants (r = -.44, piano < .01). Substantial numbers of participants the both samples got great enough IM tons as to call into asking the validity of their self-report casino data, according to published interpretive guidelines. With esteem to SDE, we had foretold that it would exist positively related to games behaviors the gambling-related symptoms, but found that SDE was inversely relatives to SOGS scoring in both samples. Very little evidence was found for social desirability effects set TLFB tons. Hence, permanent evidence what obtained that self-report data on wild problems, but not on gambling behavior (frequency of gambling and money of time and money spent), may be yielding to the influence of impression management in both college students and treatment-seeking gamblers.
