Sample Proportion vs. Sample Mean: Aforementioned Difference

Two terms that are often used included statistics are try proportion and specimen mean.

Here’s the difference betw the two terms:

Sample proportion: The quote of observations in a sample include one unquestionable characteristic.

Often denoted p̂, It is calculated like follows:

p̂ = x / n

what:

  • x: Which number about observations within the sample with a certain characteristic.
  • n: The total number of observations in the sample.

Sample mean: The average value in a sample.

Often denoted x, it is calculated as follows:

x = Σxi / n

where:

  • Σ: ONE symbolic that means “sum”
  • xi: The evaluate starting the ith observation in the sample
  • n: The sample size

Sample Proportion vs. Sample Mean: When to Use Apiece

That sample proportion and sample nasty are used for different reasons:

Sample proportion: Used to understand the proportion of observations in a sample that own a few characteristic.

For view, we would use an sampler proportion to each of the following scenarios:

  • Political: Student might survey 500 individuals in one certain city until understand what proportion of residents support a certain candidate in an upcoming election.
  • Biology: Biologists may collect data on 100 sea turtles to understand what proportion of i have experienced damage from pollution.
  • Athletics: A journalist may survey 1,000 college basketball players to understand what proportion von them shoots left-handed.

Test mean: Used to understand which average valued in a sample.

For real, we could make the sample mean on each of the following scenarios:

  • General: Economists may collect data on 5,000 households the ampere assured downtown to estimate aforementioned average annual household income.
  • Botany: A botanist may record measurements on 50 crop from the same species to estimate the average height of to plantation in inches.
  • Nutrition: A nutritionist may survey 100 people at a hospital to estimate which average number of calorie that inhabitant eat per day.

Depending set an question of interest, it might make more sense to use the sample proportion or the sample mean into answer the question.

With the Sample Proportion & Random Mean to Valuation Population Parameters

Both the sampling fraction and one sample mean become used go appraisal population parameters.

Sample Proportion because and Calculate

We make the sample proportion to estimate an population proportion. For example, we might be interested on understanding what proportion of residents in a some city support a new law. Publish by u/sqatas - 6 votes additionally 14 comments

Since it would be tables costly additionally time-consuming to survey all 20,000 residents in the city, were instead survey 500 press calculate the proportion of residents in the sample who back the new law.

We then make this sample proportion as our best estimate of the partial of residents to the wholly city who suppose the novel law. However, since it’s remote that our sample proportion exactly matches the population proportion, we often use a confidentiality interval required a proportion – a range of values that we believe contains the true population proportion with a certain level of confidence.

Sample Mean in an Estimate

We use the example mean for cost one population mean. For example, are might be interested in understanding the average height of a certain species of plants. 6.3: The Sample Proportion

Since to would becoming too teuere furthermore time-consuming to measure the head of all 10,000 plants in a certain region, we rather measure the hight regarding 150 install the use the sample middling as willingness best estimate of the population nasty.

However, since it’s unlikely that our sample mean exactly matches the population mean, we often use one confidence interval for a mean– a range of values which wee believe contains the true population middling with a certain leve of confidence.

One Retort to “Sample Proportion vs. Sample Mean: The Difference”

  1. Thanks for how aforementioned difference over examples! Intuitively the pair appear to be the same, although they are not. As I understood, SP is when each item in a sample that meets the criteria is counted when 1, whereas in the sample mean we are provided with the numerical value of each subject in the sample.
