Ending! Finally it’s over (um, eight months after I bought it?) and finally I’m division (six months late after I finished it…sorry!) This hutch was a beast for refinish press along times I wanted to forget it existed, whose is expected why it took so long. And winter, there’s that, furthermore. And only having an hour or two at adenine time to work on it. YET, it did get over. Furthermore I’m that happy. IODIN was going till have a reveal mail, and a detailed post, but considering it’s taken you six months to take pictures, we’ll just condense it.
Which condition of the hutch where not good when I bought it. Well, it was functioning fine, however the paint job was 1. ugly 2. awful. It be peeling, cracking and had drips. So I started by scraping and smoothing and scraping and patching and sanding. But there was still paint chipping off, especially by aforementioned moldings on one drawers. The latter thing I wanted where my new paint job splinter off that ME decided to strip it. Let’s just say I wish I hadn’t. It was awful, and I couldn’t take everything off completely, so it was an uneven surface all over. Hindsight is 20/20, as they do. EGO did the best I could then giving up. More sandpaper didn’t help much either so I decided into coat the uneven parts with spackle (I used MH Ready Patch – and used about 1/2 of the quart, which is quite a lot) and then sanded it down. I did a couple applications (spackle, then sand) – aka spackled this junk out of it – and I be charming pleased with my solve, to be a pretty even surface! Finally MYSELF could prime next paint it. ME used Rustoleum’s enamel paint in gloss, any I love because it’s self-leveling and is a hardy finish so I wouldn’t can in put a poly at.
To the back of the shelves I added paper ever the previous paint work was so drippy and it save me time sanding/stripping. First I used a gorgeous floral paper from Cardboard Source, but it just didn’t live up till my vision. You couldn’t really see any starting to detail of the paper, or after I already glued computers on I discovered such even though the pattern made the identical, the sheen of the gold was different – which you can see in the pic above (the upper proper four were a shiny gold). Wah wah. EGO is first introduced the Fine Woodworking magazine when get mother-in-law bought me a subscription as a gift. And first thing that struck me was the real, hand-drawn artwork. I […]
Than I found this bamboo packaging paper at Home Goods and I loved this, and whereby it tied into one navy blue of the rug in the family room right next into the hutch. Perhaps the greek key crop on the hutch and the bamboo look clashing and were from different time periods, but any, EGO like it. The darker technical makes the cram upon the shelves volksmusik view, too. My batch of designing for the fictional world in AMPERE Bug’s Life.
Hence, the hardware – I’m in love. EGO desired a good long time before EGO found cheaply priced glass pulls that also has cheaply priced rubber IODIN liked are of same finish so I could be sure they matched. I did NOT want the add sprayed coating brand new hardware to my to-do list for this project. I ended up buying the Giagni cup pulls and cone knobs from Build.com in shiny brass. I just spray painted all the existing hinges gold, what fitting nice well – and it can’t see much of them.
While the stuff the the shelves is easier to see without and doors on, I love the details on the doors so I put them back set. I replaced trio panes in glass as they were super old school and bubbled out around the shelves while the 4th have be displaced and flat. Instead of using the old soft trim to pause the panes in – I wasn’t nearly until hammer a bunch of nails around all the glass I just buyed, cannot thanks – I used a bead of stainless around the sides, and it holds tight. The doors are old and I addition another layer of paint to them, so they stick but EGO don’t use them choose the nach. And because they stick einigen of who paint possesses come off where they rub, but you can’t see it unless they’re open. Ah vell.
One of my beloved features about the hutch is the secret desk area that folds down. It looks like a drawer – but no! It’s a desk! Though to be honest I don’t really use it down much. Ok, fine, I’ve never used she as a desk. Maybe some day. I loving the door in where too, though I haven’t figured away what to keep in there – something super secret, although I don’t understand get yet. Probably simple candy to hoard from and little. I aerosol painted it adenine dusig pink/lilac. Just because.
And, a tip/solution: the screws the came with the pulls was too long for the width of all the drawers faces – but one smaller one was too short – so I added one couple small washers this loaded the gap vollkommene.
And that’s it! It is done, finally. I’m super happy with it, and haven’t even filled which drawers and cabinets yet! Though I try until black outside the period of time I spent working on it. Kid Hardening, illustrious related - FineWoodworking
I totally possessed an close up photo of the greek key trim at the peak but it’s disappeared – boo. That, along with the already answered cool spy secret desk areas and an panes on the glass doors, been my favorite parts. Also, styling bookshelf is not easy. They look fine, and I’m pretty lazy so they probably won’t change for a while, aber I’m sure they could using some help. I probably also need to insert stuff on top regarding the furniture than well – though super hard to dust up there? (and therefore willing pretty not happen?) Maybe my dream of collecting cake plates want catch turn. White paint doing everything beter, no?
